AAP TV shut down by founder Malik Riaz

A local TV channel in Lahore, AAP News closed operations according to an employee of the news channel on Saturday.

A journalist working for Aap News, Asim Sultan said, “Amir Mir, the channel’s director news, called a general meeting today where he announced the channel is being taken off the air.”

On citing the reason for the closure, Mir told the employees, “I received a call from Malik Riaz, Chairman Bahria Town, and owner of AAP TV, that he can’t run this channel due to financial constraints.”

The channel’s administration cites another reason for the termination of the channel. In an email sent to its employees, it said that it’s not possible to run the Urdu channel because of some ‘legal’ and ‘technical’ reasons. “The transmission of Aap News is being shut down with immediate effect.”

However, for the displaced employees, the email announced a full salary for this month followed by half salaries for the next three months according to the decision.
Additionally, Malik Riaz will start a new channel with the license he holds. According to the email, employees of Aap News will be given preference in hiring.

The real-estate tycoon bought the AAP Newsgroup in last year November. The group also owns the English medium Indus News channel which remains operational.
To clarify to his team, Sarmad Salik Managing Director Indus News said that his channel is not being shut down and “would continue as before”.
